I did 26 years in the Navy where we were required to stay in shape, and law enforcement after that, but after retiring, I did nothing but sit around and gain weight. I wanted a challenge and P90X looked just right for me. Even though I’m 72 years old, I lost 43 lbs. and 5″ off my waist. I’m back to the weight I was in high school.

What Bob P. won:

Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?* I was fit most of my life. Wrestled in high school, did 26 years in the Navy where we were required to stay in shape, and law enforcement after the Navy, again staying in shape was mandatory. However, after retiring, I did nothing but sit around for about 5 years, gained up to 173 lbs., and I’m only 5’8″ tall, so I looked like the before picture. I felt lethargic and sluggish, no energy, and didn’t feel healthy. Also didn’t like the way I looked.

What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?* Went to a high school reunion and was surprised by the number of classmates who had already died. Most from lack of activity and eating and drinking too much. Health became a major issue for me, so I started walking, then back to running, but didn’t really know how to eat. My mother was a good Southern cook, and most of what we ate when I was growing up was fried stuff, while bread, white rice, desserts, etc. I learned that it is called the “SAD” diet (Standard American Diet), which explains why nearly half of American adults are obese. I learned to turn the high calorie low nutrition diet around to low calorie high nutrition. It was working but not as fast as I wanted it to. The element that was missing was proper exercise.

What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody® help you overcome that challenge?* I became an ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association) certified personal trainer, and spent so much time training others that I didn’t have time for my own training. P90X taught me how to get off my plateau, where my body had stopped making gains, and by the muscle confusion technique, I started making the kind of headway I wanted.

Why did you choose this particular program?* I was already getting in fair shape, so I wanted a challenge. I watched the infomercials on TV, and P90X looked just right for me, notwithstanding the fact that I’m 72 years old. I lost 43 lbs. and 5 inches off my waist. I’m back to the weight I was in high school, and though low in testosterone (most of us are in our 70’s), I did put on right much muscle. It surprised me more than anyone. Before I began, I was stuck.

What in particular did you like about the program you chose?* I was on a major plateau, and the muscle confusion element of P90X was perfect for getting me going again. At 72, I don’t have the testosterone to build big bulky muscle, but I did get lean and put on 2 inches on my biceps – not bad for a geezer.
Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?* I am no longer ashamed of how I look. People can’t believe I’m 72; they tell me I look 50 at the most, and I attribute the new look to the intensity, and excellent training DVD’s by Tony Horton, where he explains every aspect of what we are doing and why.

How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?* Yes, for one thing I feel much better. My doctor at the last physical couldn’t believe the change. He said “You will die someday, but it won’t be from a heart attack or stroke. I’ve never seen anyone your age with an HDL level of 91.” I’ve got energy, I feel good, and no matter how long I live, I will remain functional and independent – God willing.

How did a Beachbody Supplement or Nutritional Product or Program affect any existing health conditions you have? I used to catch the first cold in town every year. I started P90X March 11th, and I haven’t been sick since. It’s only 90 days, but the way I feel I have no doubt my immune system is far better than it has ever been.

Did you achieve any other measurable improvements with a Beachbody Supplement or Nutritional Product or Program? (e.g. Blood Pressure, Blood Sugar, triglycerides, etc…) Blood pressure came down from 134/70 to 116/58, and HDL went up to 91, while LDL went down from 115 to 88. I can’t attribute that to anything but the P90X program and the nutrition I get from their supplements.
